Pond Construction

Well, here's my latest (overly) ambitious project. Rather than being content with a perfectly good flat back yard full of grass, I decided I should have a giant hole in it, and fill it with plants and fish. Here's a series of photos showing the construction process. Thanks much to my parents for coming up and helping out during the critical days when we were trying to manhandle a 250 pound liner and set everything up without doing anything irreversibly damaging.

The pond project is still currently in progress, and new pictures will (if I'm not to sore/tired/lazy) be added as things progress.

And it begins...our bare yard, with only a string to mark one of the potential pond layouts we considered.

We decide on a configuration, and the marking paint is sprayed down. Time for some digging.

Whew....3 weeks, a pickaxe, a digging bar, and my back later, it's not looking very promising.

Look at all the stone we have, just sitting here waiting for the hole to be completed.

Time for some help. The Takeuchi TB015 mini-excavator.

Forget being an engineer for a living, I think I'm gonna quit and go into construction.

In just a couple hours of digging...it looks like the tide is starting to turn.

Thanks to the excavator, the hole is finished in a day. Time for all the cleanup, rock removal, and fine shaping.

Then, down goes a layer of masonary sand, to smooth the surface and act as a first line of defense for the liner. [5/ 5, 1 vote]

Next goes the protective geotextile fabric, as a second layer of defense to prevent punctures in the liner.

Here's one technique for smoothing out creases in the fabric...

And finally, the liner has landed. Tada!

Now to line the inside of the liner with rock, for a more natural appearence.

And the rather nervewracking job of cutting a hole in the liner to hook up the skimmer box.

Now that's a lot of rock, time for a break.

Once all the rock is in place, we'll hose it off and pump out the dirty water.
