Marine Aquarium
Photos of my foray into overly expensive hobbies....marine aquaria. I've kept freshwater fish for years, but there's definitely more to worry about, and less margin for error, in the saltwater arena. Now, though, that the tank is set up and my fish seem happy, it all seems worth it. Check out some of the pictures.
Here's the big 125 gallon monster, just after the first of the live rock was put in.
Another picture of the tank, after more live rock, some livestock, and a month and a half of time.
A picture of the sump under the aquarium. I made it myself out of an old 30 gal aquarium, some plexiglass, aquarium sealant, and plenty of patience.
Another view of the sump. Sorry about the pillar in the middle, I'd remove it but I suspect it's load-bearing.
The first tank inhabitant, a wacky arrow crab (Stenorhynchus seticornis). Notice the blue claws.
A nassarius snail (Nassarius vibex), part of the tank's cleanup crew.
One of my three green chromis damsels (Chromis viridis). Also, in the upper right is a turbo snail. (Turbo sp.)
My peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni), ostensibly a cleaner shrimp, but this guy pretty much just forages.
Two black neon gobies (Gobiosoma oceanops). They're a couple, pretty much always hanging out together.
Fish don't come with much higher contrast patterns than this banggai cardinal (Pteragon kauderni).
My royal gramma (Gramma loredo). He's totally awesome, constantly swimming in and out around the rockwork. Very interesting to watch.
Here the gramma is building an entrance to his cave home, using macroalgae as his "door".
There he is, stealing more caulerpa.
My Hawaiian yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens). Wow, now THAT's yellow. He's kind of hard to miss.
Food for the tangs (and nesting material for the gramma, apparently), I'm trying to cultivate macroalgae in the main tank. This is feather caulerpa (Caulerpa sertularoides).
After a month and a half, I'm starting to see strange things, like this unidentified algae, start to grow out of the live rock. Can anyone identify this?
