Welcome to PuckMUD!
NOTE: I've noticed recently that the Windoze telnet program might possibly be the lamest telnet implementation ever, and doesn't seem to work quite right with this mud, since it was tested with the "standard" telnet programs available for various Unix flavors. I'm working the issue...
The link above should let you enter PuckMUD. All it's doing is telnetting to my server, however. If your browser doesn't seem to be set up for telnet links (quite possible), then try this:
- Unix: Type "telnet www.nakhleh.net 3149"
- Windows: Go to Start->Run, and type "telnet www.nakhleh.net 3149"
- Mac: Ummm...I don't have a Mac (yet). I guess you'd have to find your telnet program, then enter www.nakhleh.net as the host, and 3149 as the port.
If that doesn't work, then you're probably behind a firewall that doesn't let arbitrary port traffic through (this includes all you Lockheed Martin folks trying to connect from work...). I don't know of a good fix for this, except for me to buckle down and write some kind of client that works through http or another "acceptable" protocol. Hmmmm...that'll have to come in a future release.
History
A couple years or so ago, I found myself with a little time on my hands, and the desire to play around a bit with sockets and text processing in Perl, so I whipped this MUD up over the course of a couple or three weeks. Having no real desire to reinvent the wheel just to play around, I mercilessly borrowed syntax and commands from other muds out there. Unfortunately, since I was wrote it on a system that was not connected to the rest of the world (for reasons I won't go into here...), I did have to actually write all my own code from scratch instead of starting with one of the many fine code bases out there.
The problem came when I wanted to get the code off the system. In the end, I ended up having to print the whole thing out and OCR it back in using my Epson 1200 flatbed and Omnipage. I learned an interesting lesson about how a program designed to use context to help accuracy makes certain assumptions about the source material. Assumptions that, when violated, make for a difficult time. The long and short of it is that it took custom scripts, emacs macros, and a LOT of hand-editing to get the code working again. Due to my forgetfullness, the help system is lost, and will have to be re-written when I get some time.
I'm just getting the system on-line now, so please be patient.
MUD News
- 12/17/01 - Oops...the link was wrong for a little bit after the whole @Home-going-under debacle. Should be fixed now, though. Also, I did spruce up the support for Windows-based telnet clients somewhat. I'm still perplexed, however (anyone care to email me and clear up my confusion?), as to how to "properly" support both Unix (line at a time, auto-echo) and Windows (character at a time, no echo) style clients without really knowing which is connected to you...
- 1/27/01 - I added in logic to allow people to get new accounts without emailing the wizard (me). Should make the process of getting an account painless.
- 1/20/01 - Okay, I've finally got the code base cleaned up and running. Time to declare PuckMUD "operational".
