Well, okay, here we are for real.
Look at some of the strange formations caused by lava flows, gasses, and tides.
And another one.
On to the primeval fern-filled rainforest near the Thurston laval tube.
And there's primeval Julia, hoping to avoid capture.
Another picture of Julia looking like she's in a dinosaur movie set.
Looking out the entrance of the lava tube.
Lava tubes are formed when lava forms a "skin" around a flow, allowing a central core of lava to flow without cooling appreciably, leaving the hollow skin behind.
Julia staunchly guards the tunnel against all intruders.
This is the end of the "main" (i.e. lit) tunnel.
But we go on, with flashlights and our courage. Watch out for those wet vines!
Hmmm....looks like a cave-in. No, we're not scared.
The end of the line. Here, the lava tube comes to a point, preventing further exploration.
So we head back...only to spelunk some more another day.
Look at the proto-stalactites on the ceiling.
And, of course these weird plants (roots?) growing down from somewhere.
