3/22/04 - Whew, made an update in under a year. In case you haven't stopped by, I now have the new fishtank up and running, and a new fishcam setup to match. I also tossed up a photo gallery of the fishies. And yes, I still owe everyone galleries from my trips to China, England, the beach, and probably a few others that I've forgotten...
4/15/03 - Well, I really have no excuse. I could point to the new house, or the barren yard crying out for landscaping, or the long hours at work, or even having to get all these tax issues straightened out with the company (done now, yay!). But in the end, it's basically just my lameness that has caused me to fall so far behind on this site. Well, hopefully time to change that around a bit. So here's the status: I just rebuilt the server's software, pretty much from scratch, to get myself properly on Mandrake 9.1. Hit a few roadbumps, and the fan on my new, ebay-acquired graphics card doesn't exactly look too robust, but things appear to be operational again. If you see any problems, just shoot me an email, I'm sure I've forgotten plenty of "minor" things. I'm really sorry about the whole fishcam thing...I couldn't take the fish with me from CA, and I don't have the new tank yet, so the whole marine tank project is going to be on hold for a little bit. Such is life. On the plus side, I've started to rig the new house with X10, and hopefully computer control is just around the corner. I also have plans to set up some house coverage using multiple cameras, viewable on the web. Oh, and I have somewhere on the order of 5 or 6 thousand pictures to go through when I get a chance. We'll see how things go.
1/14/03 - Yay! After moving cross-country, dealing with the whole new house thing, getting a car, and all that jazz, I've finally set up my machines again and gotten a broadband connection at the new place. The fishcam will be down for a little while, until I've actually set up my new fishtank, but other than that, I think we're in business again!
5/13/02 - Taking advantage of my database backend, you can now vote and/or comment on any of the pictures in my galleries that you like (or don't like). I'll be putting up a best-of gallery soon, that uses visitor rankings to order the pictures, so vote for your favorites!
4/21/02 - After my latest fish death :-(, I finally broke down and got a few new fish :-). Check out the FishCam page and read all about it, or better yet, see them in action.
4/9/02 - Whew (he says at 3:15am), looks like the first php frontend, database backend version is up. Still haven't implemented some of the fun things I want to do, but at least the groundwork has been laid. Also, due to some requests for a style layout scheme that's more readable, I rolled that in at the same time. Don't hesitate to drop me a note if something is broken (I'm sure some things will be...), and stay tuned for more pictures and features.
3/25/02 - Well, there may have been a few minor interruptions, after a kernel patch went awry (you'd think if the patch can't be done through Mandrake Software Update, then maybe they'd have a flag set on somewhere to prevent MSU from clobbering the system...), followed by a subsequent upgrade to Mandrake 8.1 to correct the problem, followed by another upgrade to the latest (8.2) distribution. The upshot, however, is that I'm playing around with the system again, and am currently feeling the inspiration to go ahead and do a revamp. Look for a new look in the near future. Plus, I'm gonna switch over to PHP / mySQL for serving my image galleries, which will allow me to do fun things like letting people vote for their favorite pictures. Stay tuned....
3/6/02 - The pictures from my February trip to the big island of Hawaii are up (all except the scuba diving pictures...I still have to scan those in). Check them out when you get a chance.
2/11/02 - Okay, okay, I've been very lax in putting up new pictures. I figured having the digital camera would make it a lot easier to add pictures to the site (and, in fact, it certainly is), however I've found that it's still a lot more fun to actually take the pictures than to do the post-processing and get them up on the site. Nevertheless, I'll be putting up more galleries in the near future. Here...start with some good pictures of my fish (if you're into that) taken with my new digital camera and macro lens.
12/17/01 - Well, @home went under, that was fun. Surprisingly, things only went down for a couple days (impressive work, AT&T!). I had to redo the DNS stuff a bit thought because of the way the ISP changed, so email me if there are any funky/broken/unhappy links I missed...
8/16/01 - Wohoo! The new Canon D30 camera is really cool. I just took a trip to alaska with my new possession, and the pictures are up and ready for your perusal. Check them out!
7/30/01 - The transition has been completed. With only minimal interruption, the site has been migrated to an Athlon 800 with 256 MB of memory, and a 30 GB hard drive. Quite an improvement, from my end. More info will be forthcoming soon...
7/10/01 - Well, my new computer has arrived (in pieces), been assembled, and is currently being "burned in"...with some heavy-duty gaming of course. Because of this, the webcam is temporarily off-line, as I execute the computer shuffle. I'll be reinstalling the webcam software on the new machine shortly. Then, I'll be overhauling my old machine, making it into a new linux server. Hopefully that will go smoothly and I'll transfer the site to the better, more powerful box.
6/10/01 - Pictures from Lockheed Martin's Rocket Day are up...stop by the photos section for some amateur rocketry action!
6/07/01 - Finally, the Australia pictures are done. Check them out in the photos section. Whew! Scanning in all these pictures takes too long. I may not be psychic, but I see a Canon D30 in my near future...
4/09/01 - Well, I've set up a team for the new United Devices-Intel-University of Oxford distributed computing project to help look for new drugs to help fight childhood Leukemia. Check out Team Puck!
3/27/01 - Hmmmm...fixed a problem with the add comments script. As it turns out, this bug wasn't the earth-shaking problem that it could have been, mostly due to the fact that only one person tried to actually enter a comment during the entire time.
3/20/01 - Wohoo! The site just got hit by its first "rolling blackout". Thankfully, Linux rebooted and brought everything back up just fine, despite the abrupt loss of power. I love California!
3/12/01 - The first installment of the Australia photo journal is up! Boy, scanning in all those pictures is a lot of work...I think I need a digital camera...
2/20/01 - The Israel pictures are complete. (whew!) Time to play some more Baldur's Gate 2... :-)

2/2/01 - The fishcam is down for (hopefully only) a few days, but I've added PuckMUD, hopefully as consolation for any hardened fish-watchers who now need something to do. :-) I'm still in the middle of playing Baldur's Gate 2 (greate game, highly recommended for anyone who's ever played a role-playing game, computer or traditional, and enjoyed it), so the pictures are coming slowly. Hopefully, I've have some of the Israel gallery ready in a couple days.
1/2/01 - Happy millenium everyone! My grand plans to scan in a bunch of pictures and work on the site over the holiday break were sabotaged most effectively by the appearance of Baldur's Gate II in the Christmas stocking... Oh well.
12/14/00 - Unfortunately, I've found that I can't scan in pictures and play Quake 3 at the same time, and scanning isn't always winning out. Don't worry, though, I'm still slowly working through pictures from Israel, and pictures from my recent trip to Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Also, some recent experiments with photo editing have convinced me that I need to upgrade this poor machine. Hopefully I'll get my act together and order the parts soon. Please leave comments with any suggestions for things to improve on the site...
12/06/00 - Pictures from my sister's wedding are now up. I think I'll tackle the Israel pictures next...there's a lot of them, so it might be a while.
12/03/00 - Still working on getting things in order. I've updated the style of the pages, to give it at least a modicum of consistency. I added a little something about me, and about the site. Took a first cut at the pets page. Added Las Vegas pictures, among others. Looks like things are coming together, albeit slowly. Also, I discovered at CostCo the "missing roll" of film from Hawaii. Look for the new pictures on pages 3-4.
11/25/00 - Finished first gallery of pictures. Nice tour of Hawaii, if I do say so myself. I had to do some of the groundwork, like writing a Perl-Fu GIMP script to downconvert my high-res images, and writing a Perl script to autogenerate the pages from a much-easier-to-maintain data file. Now all I have to do is come up with goofy captions, and Gimp and Perl will do the rest. So, look for more galleries soon. It looks like the long pole will be just scanning in all the pictures.
11/19/00 - Created news :-) Also, created the framework for these pages. I have almost a hundred Hawaii photos scanned in, but haven't set up a decent system to automate "webifying" them yet (i.e. cropping, reducing resolution, and creating thumbnails). In any case, hopefully I'll get some time this week to hunker down and get at least some content here. Beautifying can come later.
